Five Minutes With...The North American Best Dressed Bloggers

The first North American blogger I chose to feature is Janie Marshall from Flower Grows Wild. Janie is a fashion designer, currently based out of New York City (and while typing this, I am turning green with envy!). She focuses on inspiration, designer collections and detailing, as well as editorials! If you're looking for gorgeous photos and killer content, her blog is one to check out. Here is her interview:

Who, What, When, Where, Why

How would you describe your collection?
The Janie Marshall line (launching SS2011) is best described as "Road-Trip Ready." The line is inspired by the good old US of A, and is basically a modern luxurious take on American heritage. The Spring Summer 2011 collection, "Spirit of Wildflowers," which is the launch collection, is inspired by Texas heritage, from Mexican to Native American to country music to bluebonnets. Texas is where I was born so I thought I'd start there! The collection is modern and cool with a big focus on prints and fun pop colors - and is basically just about being able to get up and throw something on and hit the road, looking totally dope and unique from day into night! Before I designed this line I worked for a lot of fashion houses in NYC as a senior designer and am now finally launching my own line. Very excited! Look for our website coming soon!

In your sidebar photo, I can spot a tattoo on your arm! What is it of and what inspired you to get it?
The tattoo is of a wolf (which is my totem animal) and it says "Feed The Good One" over it. The text is inspired by a Native American legend about the good wolf and the bad wolf that live inside us all, and are at war our whole lives. The grandfather tells his grandson about this, and the grandson asks, "which one wins?" to which the grandfather replies, "the one you feed." So it's a little reminder :-)

What is your favorite clothing store in NYC?
I shop everywhere but I have to say I'm always happiest when leaving Malin Landeaus Vintage in Williamsburg. I feel like she and I share a vintage brain, not to mention I can grab a money Erica Weiner jewelry piece while I'm there.

What fashion faux-pas are you guilty of committing?
I think my biggest problem sometimes is that I love animal prints and statement gold jewelry, and occasionally I will pile on so much stuff that I end up looking like some sort of 70s pimp by accident. Now I try to remove a piece or three before I go out.

What trend would you love to see fade?
I'm cool with most trends actually, it keeps us designers and bloggers in business… I'm glad the harsh black rocker look is fading right now into something a little more feminine and unique. Let's bring back fun!

What article of clothing do you think completes an outfit?
I love my All Saints brown leather jacket… talk about road-trip ready! I like wearing it with all-black outfits just to mix it up. I'm really into hats too… I have an Urban Outfitters black hat, I guess it's kind of a trilby - I throw it on over everything. Hats have a way of stepping up an outfit into something pretty cool.

What are your beauty must-haves?
I like Chanel makeup… I don't really wear much makeup so I like to have their red lipgloss #217 on me in case I gotta go to a party or something. I think the only change from day to night should just be throwing on some red lip gloss. That's what my line is about too… just being ready to go!

If...

If you had the opportunity to receive a haute couture dress (for free!), what designer would you pick to design it?
I'm gonna go with my man Karl Lagerfeld on this one and say Chanel… he's just awesome and his eye for detail is a consistent inspiration for me as a designer. I love how he manages to make feminine haute couture somehow totally rock and roll.

If you could host your own fashion show for this collection, what city would you choose to host it in and what model would you choose to open the show?
New York City, baby! And Dree Hemingway.

If you could travel anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go and why?
I've traveled a lot in Europe and Asia as a designer… right now since I'm already thinking about Fall 2011 collection I'd like to go to New Orleans… I haven't been post-Katrina and I'd really like to do a collection based on the history and culture of New Orleans… it's such a fascinating story and cast of characters. I'm kind of focused on the US for a while since I have done so much overseas travel in the past five years… I gotta hit Graceland soon too! :-)

If you could create your own nail polish (think OPI's crazy collections), what color would it be and what would you name it?
I would do a pine green color and call it Northwoods… I'm really inspired by nature and I love the Northwoods of Wisconsin and the whole lumberjack culture up there. Haha I also love wacky colors on nails! I'm sure the lumberjacks would appreciate it, they probably think about nail polish colors all the time.

End the interview with a song lyric or quote!
"So now I’m goin’ back again, I got to get to her somehow. All the people we used to know, they’re an illusion to me now. Some are mathematicians, Some are carpenters’ wives. Don’t know how it all got started, I don’t know what they’re doin’ with their lives. But me, I’m still on the road, headin’ for another joint. We always did feel the same, We just saw it from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue." -Bob Dylan

The second blogger I chose to feature is Norine from Fashion Tadpole.
Norine is from California and runs one of the best inspiration blogs I have stumbled upon on the net! If you're looking for model candids, designer collections, and anything pretty, her blog is a go-to! She felt inspired to start her own blog to post all of her fashion photos as well as people that inspire her. Here is her interview:

Who, What, When, Where, Why

What do you like and dislike about California's fashion scene?
I like how the weather allows people to wear a lot of cute summery things, I dislike that everyone wears the same kind of styles from a few stores that are considered “cool”. I also wish it would get colder in the winter so I could wear more layers and great coats and boots.

Who and what inspires you?
I love Mary Kate Olsen, Nicole Richie, Rachel Zoe, Kate Moss, and Miroslava Duma. I also get the majority of my inspirations from reading fashion blogs and I love the way Andrew Vanwyngarden from the band MGMT dresses.

What is your favorite recent editorial?
I really liked The Space Cadet Editorial with Abbey Lee Kershaw for i-D.

What fashion faux-pas are you guilty of committing?
I know some people say Uggs are the Crocs of winter but I can’t help slipping them on when I feel cold and lazy some mornings.

What was your favorite collection at the recent fashion weeks?
I loved Proenza Schouler, Giambattista Valli, and Marni.

What part of an outfit do you find to be underrated?
I think accessories. They always add your own personal touch to whatever you are wearing and can make such a statement.

What are your beauty must-haves?
Cetaphil, Aquaphor, Clinique Moisture Surge, Mac studio fix powder, YSL lip gloss, L’Oreal Voluminous mascara, Chanel Fluid eye shadow.

If...

If you were given the opportunity to be given any designer bag (for free!), which one would you choose?
I’ve been in love with the black Balenciaga motorcycle bag for years now.

If you could work for a magazine for a day, which one would you choose and why?
I would chose harpers bazaar because it is my favorite fashion magazine to read and there editorials are always so interesting and beautiful.

If you could hang out with someone involved in the fashion industry (i.e. model, designer, editor), who would you choose and why?
I would choose Andre Leon Talley the Editor in Chief of Vogue because he knows everything there is to know about fashion and the industry and I love his crazy and funny personality.

If you could create your own nail polish (think OPI's crazy collections), what color would it be and what would you name it?
Hmm I think I would make the perfect shade of red (even though I’m sure every shade of red imaginable already exists). I think I would just name it “classic” because red nails never go out of style.
